What is a FORTIFIED™ Roof?

Ways roofs are fortified to improve nails, water sealing, and edges to protect against wind.

FORTIFIED™ is a voluntary construction and re-roofing Program designed by the insurance industry to strengthen homes and commercial buildings against specific types of severe weather such as high winds, hail, hurricanes and even tornadoes. When severe weather strikes, a FORTIFIED Roof keeps the wind and rain out, preventing a cascade of damage that can destroy your home and belongings. FORTIFIED Roof was specifically designed to prevent damage that commonly occurs during high winds, hurricanes, hailstorms, severe thunderstorms, and even tornadoes up to EF-2. No matter what type of roof you have—shingles, metal, or tile—FORTIFIED Roof requirements will make your home stronger. FORTIFIED Roofs have stronger edges, a sealed roof deck, better attachment, and may include impact-resistant shingles. There are 3 levels of FORTIFIED roofs (Basic, Silver, Gold) with different requirements. Unless the FORTIFIED standard is part of your local building codes, it's typical that an additional inspection after construction is required to received FORTIFIED certification and to receive subsidies and insurance discounts. FORTIFIED Roofs may have to be recertified every five years to continue receiving insurance discounts. Learn more about the FORTIFIED standard here.

How can I tell if I need a FORTIFIED Roof?

If you live in a location with a risk of hurricane or severe storm damage (Louisiana, and more than 20% of the United States) then you may want to consider a FORTIFIED Roof. Several states offer subsidies for FORTIFIED Roof construction and many insurance companies also offer discounts if your property is in a high-risk location. Insurance companies in Louisiana offer average discounts of 22% on insurance premiums, with average annual savings of $1250. Here's a report that was submitted to the LA state legislature on insurance discounts.

What is a FORTIFIED Solar Roof?

A FORTIFIED Solar Roof combines the requirements for a FORTIFIED Roof with solar panels and may also include a power storage battery. You can keep your FORTIFIED roof certification when you install solar panels provided you follow the program requirements, saving you money on both insurance AND energy costs each month.  Just let us know if you'd like a free solar assessment for the purchase or lease of a rooftop solar system and we'll have local solar providers get in touch. Research has shown that roofs with solar panels are more resistant to damage than those without.

In addition, as of July 1, 2025, the State of Louisiana offers a non-refundable state income tax credit of up to $10,000 for homeowners who install FORTIFIED roofs.  However, there is an annual cap on this credit and an application that you must submit in order to claim the credit, so you should consult a tax professional and review the legislation's requirements HERE.
